Before the United States implemented whale protection laws, whales used to be hunted on the Washington Coast. Using harpoon cannons, including the one outside the center, whales were sought after for their blubber, which could be used to make lamp oil, perfume, candles, and other valuable items.
We have bones from a variety of whales. Here visitors can learn about these magnificent creatures and what to do if they find one washed up on the beach.

What is a Harpoon Cannon, and how is it used?
Watch as Sully takes us on a quick guided tour of one our outdoor exhibits… the Harpoon Cannon! This is an antique of a by-gone era which was used to hunt whales from 1800’s, but it’s history is still important. Have you stopped by the Center and seen this yourself?
