Glimpses Lecture Series

The Coastal Interpretive Center has hosted the Glimpses Lecture Series every winter since 2014. Topics range from birdwatching to beachcombing and everything in between.

The 2023-2024 Glimpses Lecture Series is held in person on the third Thursday or Friday of each month from October through March at the Ocean Shores Lions Club from 7-9 pm. Cost of admission is $10/person to be paid at the door. Join us in learning about the natural and cultural history of Washington’s Pacific Coast!

2023-2024 Series

October 19 – Madeline Roth

Title: “Early Encounters on a Western Frontier: The search for Sv. Nikolai(1807-1808)”

Biography: Maddie is a maritime archaeologist with the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries’ Maritime Heritage Program whose research focuses on shipwrecks.


November 16 – Frithiof Teal Waterstrat

Title: “Coastal Conservation in SW Washington Supporting ESA Listed Coastal Birds and the status and story of otters in Washington”

Biography: Teal is the USFWS Washington Coastal Program Coordinator who works on conservation of shorebirds and sea otters as well as other animals and ecosystems.


December 21 –TPACEM Team

Title: “The Joy and Wonder of Ocean Shores’ Sea Stars”

Biography: The TPACEM (tidal pool and coastal erosion monitoring program) team studies tidal pool ecosystems, biodiversity, and beach erosion along Washington’s Pacific Coast.


January 18 –Jessie Huggins

Title: “The Marine Mammal Stranding Network on the Washington Coast: Who We Are, What We Do, and Why It Is Important”

Biography: Jessie is a research biologist and stranding coordinator with Cascadia Research Collective with nearly 20 years experience working with marine mammal stranding responses.


February 16 – Liz Schotmann

Title: “Plastics and Its Impacts to the Environment”

Background: Liz Schotmann, Pacific Northwest Regional Manager of the Surfrider Foundation, will lead a presentation on plastics and its impacts to the environment and human health. The lecture will be followed by an interactive roundtable discussion about reducing plastic use in our households. 


March 22 –Scott Harris

Title: “‘Human Wildlife Dimensions”

Biography: Scott is a Wildlife Biologist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife with years of experience navigating interactions between people and wildlife.
